“(On) the security theme, look for lots of software companies to abandon support for old products and OS’s. From their perspective, they already have your money, so continuing support is just a cost centre for them.
And if they stop support, you just may replace that old computer or application with something new, generating additional software sales opportunities. This means Microsoft giving up support for old OS variants and hardware, but it also means the same from security companies like Network Associates (McAfee) and Symantec (Norton AntiVirus).
More and more old machines will become vulnerable, and a new kind of web-destroying attack using just antiquated, pre-Pentium IV Windows 9x, personal computers, is entirely likely. — Predictions for 2004, by Robert X. Cringely, writer, broadcaster, computer guy, PBS and InfoWorld columnist

Hollywood’s One Stop News Shop
Time to introduce David Poland to those of you not in the know.
The prickly, but very readable, Mr. Poland writes a daily online column, called The Hot Button (available as the second to last link under Cinema) covering Hollywood, industry shenanigans, the cinema, and everything and anything related to the movie industry, each day Monday to Friday.
Written from an insider’s perspective, but never seeking to curry favour with the movers and shakers down Tinseltown way, Mr. Poland’s enthusiastic but still reasoned take on Hollywood has been must reading for many, dating back to the column’s début Friday, August 22nd, 1997.
In recent years, Mr. Poland has sought to expand the forum for his writing, the main result of which is Movie City News.com, which sports up-to-date links to important stories concerning Hollywood, and analysing trends in the industry and their impact on the rest of us.

Or, the desserts just keep on comin’

It was a rainy day, so it wasn’t crowded on the beach. And it didn’t rain constantly, and it was about 28 degrees Celsius, so it wasn’t cold.
